The formats will be published in a Handbook and feature practical tips for simple implementation. Target Group: Interested parties from the independent performing arts community and cultural communicators who want to conceptualize and try out new communication formats. Audience members are also warmly invited to participate!

New working processes and presentation forms are continuously being developed and implemented in the independent performing arts community. The integration of the audience within a production is the core of the work and this is frequently called into question. What is expected of the audience? Do we want to show the audience something and say something to it, do we want to know the opinion of the audience, hear the reaction of the audience, exchange with the audience, let the audience participate actively? What does the audience expect from us
Communication formats are an opportunity to refine, deepen and rediscover the relationship with the audience. The diverse, experimental independent performing arts community needs appropriate communication formats. These represent new connections to the audience and they will create new spaces for encounters.

Each newly conceived format will be tested and adjusted three to five times at various production and performance venues. In an additional step, the formats will be presented in the planned handbook and will feature practical tips for their implementation.
Who can participate?
All interested parties from the independent performing arts community as well as cultural communicators and those seeking to become cultural communicators are warmly invited to conceptualize communication formats. Audience members are also warmly invited to participate!
From the selected suggestions, we will look for creators who would like to test their communication formats themselves and with the support of Theater Scoutings Berlin in Berlin's independent performing arts community three to five times in the spring and fall of 2017 - if necessary, it is possible to entrust a theater scout with the test phase.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for ideas for communication formats which create an interesting connection between an artistic production and the audience beyond traditional post-performance discussions or introductions.
We are interested in communication formats that can be easily implemented directly before or after an event and which last between ten minutes and one hour. The formats should be able to be realized by a wide group of individuals aside from the creator of the idea.
The formats should be able to be used for multiple productions. However, it is possible that an idea is limited to a specific genre and/or target group. While communication formats for children and young people are not excluded, we do prefer formats that are intended for an adult audience.
Important note: This project sees itself as a laboratory for experimentation. All ideas are welcome, including ideas that appear to be difficult to realize! A workshop will be offered (see below) in order to specify ideas and practically further develop them as well as a test phase which makes it possible to adjust the communication formations over the course of multiple trials.
How can I participate?
The submission deadline for ideas of new communication formats is November 15, 2016.
The submissions must include a short biography and a brief description of up to a half page with the following content:
- Goal and principle of the communication format
- Target group/genre of the performing arts, if applicable
- Possible course of events of the communication format
- Possible ideas of productions (specific or genre) and/or performance venues that could be especially well-suited to the format
Schedule for the Handbook Project (subject to changes):
December 2016 - January 2017: The selected ideas will be announced. The creators of the selected ideas will be invited to attend a workshop format. From idea to concept: alongside the opportunity to exchange and provide input on communication formats, the goals, procedures and practical conditions of the formats will be clarified during the workshop. After the workshop, a complete concept for the format should exist in order to be able to look for suitable productions for the test phase afterward.
February – July 2017: First test phase: Each newly conceived format will be tested and adjusted three to five times at various production and performance venues.
The formats will be evaluated at the end of the first test phase.
September – December 2017: Second test phase: The formats that receive a favorable evaluation will be tested and adjusted again as needed.
2018: In an additional step, the formats will be presented in the planned handbook and will feature practical tips for their implementation. The handbook will contain up to ten different formats and will be made available both in printed form as well as online to member of the independent performing arts community. The goal of the handbook is to sustainably, specifically and effectively support members of the independent performing arts community in developing and implementing communication formats and activities.
What do I get out of this?
This project provides an infrastructure for trying things out and sharing self-conceptualized communication formats for various productions within the independent performing arts community. Participants can stress test their own ideas with the support of experts. The project sees itself as a platform for exchange and for the critical examination of communication activities.
The formats will be published in a handbook; the entries will be accredited to their creators and contact information will also be listed, if desired. The goal is to strengthen the personal network of the participants and the interested members of the community. All participants will receive a small fee.
Who is behind this project?
Nathalie Frank and Swetlana Gorich from the area of Audience Generation and Communication of the Berlin Performing Arts Program are cooperating with Dr. Ute Pinkert, who teaches theater education at the Berlin University of the Arts and researches theater communication. In addition, we are cooperating with an advisory committee of experts for the selection of the ideas and their further development.
