The 2022 Edition of Performersion – Power in Digital Theater

At the moment, there are a very large number of events focusing on the practical application of digital tools and on the aesthetic formulation of digital formats. (And, frankly, it is about time). With this is mind, we would like to take a look at the power structures in digital theater in this year’s edition of Performersion and look beyond aesthetics and practice. After all, the reflection upon power relationships is not only an aesthetic feature of a great deal of the work created within the independent performing arts, but also deeply ingrained within the ways in which many artists develop and refine materials as well as the methods they use.

But have the ownership and property relationships of digital platforms and art products already been structurally examined and reflected upon like the routine analysis of cultural production in physical spaces that has been routinely conducted for many years? If the gatekeeping power of jury members and the directors of performance venues is less present in digital spaces, who is it that controls these digital access points? How has the role of digital curators changed? Is the utopian claim true that performing artists can now become self-determined broadcasters of their own art in safe spaces that they choose themselves? Who earns money from all of the video recordings that have been made available online and the other online formats? How many rights of exploitation have been unintentionally ceded to tech companies because the general terms and conditions are opaque? And what factors must be taken into consideration on the search for fair representation on digital stages?

In an attempt to begin to find answers to these questions, we have invited powerful (in terms of their knowledge) experts from the fields of politics, the performing arts and digital artists and will also present empowering workshops. On each of the three days, we will meet in a safe expedition camp on Gather.Town and set off from there on excursions to digital cultural spaces.

The Berlin Performing Arts Program has worked with re:publica and additional cooperation partners since 2016 to bring members of the independent performing arts community together with experts in digitalism: international artists, game developers, experts from the field of technology and research meet regularly to develop ideas, try out practical approaches in collaborative formats as well as to exchange. The different strengths of the participants helps to provide inspiration, transfer knowledge and to test out new approaches and methods. Performersion thus functions as an interface from which the participants are able to continuously develop interdisciplinary impulses and bring these back to their respective working fields.

Presentation & Discussion

As of this legislative period, Anna Kassautzki is the deputy chair of the Committee on Digital Affairs of the Bundestag. In her first speech in the Bundestag, she addressed, amongst other topics, the inherent infrastructural deficits behind IT security vulnerabilities (such as the 0-day vulnerabilities in Log4j). We would very much like to learn from her what strategies she uses in order to improve the power structures and/or framework conditions of digital developments as well as how she understands the shift of power of digital political discourse.

The work of allapopp and Janne Kummer have set standards for years in terms of how the critical use of digital tools can function for the arts. Out of the many digital instruments, artificial intelligence is probably ascribed the greatest power amplification. Using the example of the project The House of Monstress Intelligenzia at HAU – Hebbel am Ufer, they will jointly consider how a queer feminist AI could function, appear and feel.

Workshops & Seminars

The face: nothing is digitally manipulated more regularly, and yet it also serves as a login for more and more electronic devices. FaceApp is one of the most used apps in the world. Every day, Instagram produces hundreds of millions of digitally filtered facial images. The altered face is an enormous market and influences the life of countless human beings. There are tools that empower human beings to create and publish face filters themselves. These applications are closely related to the use of masks and mask masking; that is, they are actually quite close to the core competence of performing artists. In this workshop, participants who already have basic digital knowledge (and who have ideally already worked with graphic programs) will learn how to design, program and publish their own face filters.

Requirements for participation in the workshop are:

  • laptop or computer with good internet connection
  • headphones
  • the possibility to install extra software (Spark AR) on your computer – after registration you will receive an e-mail with installation instructions

Jasmin Grimm, who has been able to provide new impetuses with the NEW NOW festival she curates and who has received a great deal of attention for that, will speak about her experiences with digital curation. Does she see a new curatorial practice emerging here? How do power relationships and processes shift in digital space? What roles do ownership questions play in the production of a digital festival? Jasmin Grimm will provide answers to these and other questions.

Susanne Chrudina has been successful in establishing a functional digital infrastructure for the realization of digital formats in the framework of the four national contests that she is responsible for. How has that been possible in an institution like the Berliner Festspiele? She will sketch out the goals she followed and how she was able to realize them in this keynote speech. She will also dare to take a look at the future of the digital accompaniment of festival formats with younger target groups.

Podium Discussion

How does the role profile of directors in cultural institutions change when they shift to the digital? What happens with democratic structures and architectures when artistic production moves to the internet? What strategies have proved themselves to be usable over the last two years and what has failed magnificently? These and other questions will be illuminated by people who have also experienced and designed these processes behind the scenes.

To close out the event, we are offering intensive workshop sessions in which individual digital structures are examined in terms of their internal power structures. Together, we will closely investigate aspects of organizational development as well as the digital-forensic analysis of software and hardware using examples of the practical implementation of the GDPR as orientation. The participants who have registered will be contacted by us in advance in order to incorporate suitable experts as well as possible.
