Berlin Cultural Policy Update

A great deal has changed in Berlin’s cultural policy since the elections in 2016: The double budget for 2018/2019 contains signi cant additional funding for culture, but what does this mean for the indepen- dent performing arts community? Numerous pieces of real estate have been secured for the independent performing arts community, but the Uferhallen have been sold and the future of Alte Münze is uncertain. What does Senator Lederer mean by the term “basic culture”? How will the existing instruments be further developed? Which of the numerous initiatives created by dance and theater makers newly arrived in Berlin over the last months have proven themselves to be sustainable? How are the loud controversies within Berlin’s ensemble and repertory theater community re ected within the independent performing arts community? And what is actually going on with the Berlin Palace?
