New Circus, Varieté and Club Performance

“New circus” understands itself as an artistic theatrical format. In contrast to forms in which the focus is placed on pure virtuosity or athletic records, a dramaturgical and aesthetic overall concept is at work here which expresses the personality, biographer and physicality of the performer and makes it the content of the work. The Berlin Circus Festival and numerous varietés are bringing larger and larger audiences to new circus and the number of artists (also international and highly nomadic) in the city is increasing. It is also no coincidence that circus and varieté-like stage formats are appearing in more and more clubs in Berlin: no matter whether it is Sisyphos, ://about blank, the Pornceptual Partys or Ritter Butzke, all of the major clubs experiment with stage formats and some have been established for years. Current developments within the community as well as new perspectives will be presented and discussed.
