Conversing in the Cultural Sector – Methods of Conflict Management
Conversing in the Cultural Sector – Methods of Conflict Management
Our society is a plural assembly–diverse, contradictory, in a state of constant negotiation–and democracy depends upon us remaining in dialogue with each other. Art and culture can support these dialogues, give them space and not only endure contradictions but, in the best cases, make them productive.
The foundation for democratic, productive spaces for conversation with civil societies is functioning internal communication: a tolerance for mistakes and ambiguity, respectful conduct with each other and confidence in one’s own structure result in work processes that make it possible for culture makers to deal with challenging and conflictual discourses and topics. The conversation, however, is not always easy and we do not always find ourselves in structures that allow or support open dialogue. It is not uncommon for different expectations, ways of working and interests to clash. Conflicts here are unavoidable, no matter whether they are within the team, in the collaboration with external artists or cooperation partners.
This workshop will look at case studies and methods that help to deal with conflicts in a respectful manner. We are asking: which working processes and methods support a democratic culture of discussion? How are conflicts resolved? How can dialogue be successful in the event of conflicts – without exclusion? And: what support do culture makers need in order to sustainably preserve these spaces?
