Open Call "Present the Community!" – 2024 Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days

How can Berlin’s landscape of the independent performing arts be made (even more) visible in all of its diversity? We are on the lookout for ideas to this question!

For the first time, the Berlin Performing Arts Program will be coordinating the Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days. It is a not festival that is behind this question, but instead a comprehensive campaign that seeks to communicate the diversity of the community to a wide Berlin-based audience and, in doing so, place a strong focus on community work and easily accessible events for audiences. The Independent Performing Arts Community Days will take place for the first time from September 5 to 15, 2024, and annually thereafter.

Within the scope of this, we are turning to all members of Berlin’s independent performing arts community with the open call Present the Community!: How can the enormous diversity within our community be presented? How can new audience members (as well as old ones) be made curious about the indepenent performing arts? And is there something that connects the entire community?

Over the course of a first step (deadline: July 3, 2024), we are searching for ideas, which can be big or also very small. These can be activities – such as artistic interventions, audio walks, parades, walks, pop-up info stands, shared celebrations or tours that connect the performance venues to each other (similar to the activities in the past offered by the Berlin Performing Arts Festival). In addition, suggestions that take aspects of public relations work into consideration are very welcome such as an overall slogan, a linking image or an idea for a film. In order to keep the effort required to submit a suggestion as low as possible, a brief sketch of the project idea is sufficient initially.

Over the course of a second step, at least three ideas will be selected and the respective applicants will be invited to elaborate their sketch into a complete concept in exchange for a fee. Following this, a concept will be selected from these completed concepts and the Berlin Performing Arts Program will arrange to have it realized for this year’s edition of the Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days.

2024 Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days: Open Call Present the Community!

For the 2024 Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days, we are on the lookout for ideas that…

• making the landscape of Berlin’s independent performing arts community visible and connecting as many of the parts of the community as possible with each other.
• Could in principle take place during the time period from September 5 to September 15, 2024.
• these can be comprised of artistic elements and/or communicative elements or aspects of public relations work.

Who Is This Call Intended For?

• Performance venues, artists, mediators and other community members who are already active within Berlin’s independent performing arts community

What Should Be Submitted?

• A sketch for a project that express the basic project idea (max. 1 page A4, German or English)
• A short description of the people involved and/or organization(s) including web links

What are the next steps?

• Over the course of a first step, at least three ideas will be selected and the respective applicants will be invited to elaborate their sketch into a complete concept in exchange for a fee of 500 Euro.
• Over the course of a second round, one of the elaborated concepts will be selected to be realized during this year’s edition of the Berlin Independent Performing Arts Community Days This realization will be commissioned by the Berlin Performing Arts Program and correspondingly remunerated
• In addition, we would like to present the fully elaborated concepts to an interested audience of industry professionals
