Summer Sessions: AI in the Independent Performing Arts

Part of the Summer Sessions in cooperation with the project IUNO of HTW Berlin

July 16-19, all-day

Everyone is talking about AI and XR, but you’re still not really sure which tools could be interesting for your work in the independent performing arts? Are you asking yourself how you could use AI to make the organization work surrounding your projects and artistic work as a freelancer easier and where it is better to use them only lightly? Have you already heard of Unity, Gemini and other applications but you still haven’t really tried them out?

In the Summer Sessions PAP meets IUNO: AI and XR in the Independent Performing Arts, the Berlin Performing Arts Program and IUNO – the Innovation Center for Intelligent and Immersive Technologies in the Independent Arts Community join forces and offer help: for four days, a variety of workshops and rounds of discussion will provide insight into the use of AI and XR in art, production, distribution and artistic freelance work.

IUNO will provide practice-oriented yet experimental workshops about immersive technologies (XR for short, like, for example, virtual reality) and artificial intelligence, for example, the use of the software Unity, which can be used to create and perform in virtual and hybrid 3D worlds, for the development and integration of avatars in XR environments as well as about various motion capture methods that do not require professional suits and are more easily accessible. The Performing Arts Program will use workshops and rounds of discussion to look at how AI tools can provide support in application processes as well as in budgeting and project accounting and how they can be used in communication, distribution and research. The schedule of events will be rounded out by rounds of discussion about ethical and legal questions that can come up with the use of AI tools.

The workshops are not sequential; they can be booked individually or together. The events will take place in English or German spoken language. Registration is required for all formats and can be made using the email contact provided.

Workshops & Seminars
With Carsten Wagner (website developer and programmer)

Many freelancers spend a lot of time with organization, communication and administration – often using tools that they already know (email, Word, Excel, Google). This seminar uses an everyday four-step approach to show how an input can be processed with a suitable AI assistant and integrated within your working structure in order to ultimately generate a desired result such as an email, a spreadsheet, et cetera. AI will then be practice using a consistent example – from a phone call to a voice memo to sending a follow-up email and archiving contacts – without programming and with a focus on one’s practice and with materials to take away.

In addition, the seminar will provide suitable app/office solutions for recurring tasks and tips for practical cautionary steps to ensure privacy. The workshop is intended for freelancers and GbRs working in the independent performing arts –with and without prior experience in the use of AI tools. No programming knowledge is required.

Participants are asked to bring a laptop or tablet with WLAN and access to text/spreadsheet tools as well as a browser AI (e.g ChatGPT or Claude).

Workshops & Seminars
With Dagmar Schürrer (digital artist, artistic project associate in the project IUNO, HTW Berlin)

Imagine that you are communicating in real time with your digital twin – in a virtual 3D world like virtual reality, for example. This IUNO workshop will show you how things work! We will start with a theoretical introduction in order to create a digital twin of ourselves and connect it with a large language model (like ChatGPT) in the software Unity. In this workshop, we will use plugins that do not require any programming knowledge in order to achieve a basic understanding for setting up socially interactive agents in extended reality environments.

In order to prepare, please use IUNO Tutorial #01 to install the software Unity free of charge on your own laptop, open the software once at home and bring your computer to the workshop with you. If you have any problems installing or opening the software, we are happy to help – just send us an email by July 15 to hi-iuno [at] htw-berlin.de (hi-iuno[at]htw-berlin[dot]de).

Initial knowledge of Unity, e.g. from the workshop XR Development with Unity on July 16 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm is beneficial, but not required.

With Dagmar Schürrer (digital artist, artistic project associate in the project IUNO, HTW Berlin)

Artificial intelligence (AI) can simplify artistic processes and make them less expensive for art and culture makers – such as motion tracking, for example. This technology is used to record body movements and transfer them, to 3D avatars, for example. This IUNO workshop first offers an overview of different motion capture methods and their use in an artistic context. Finally, we will experiment with AI-controlled apps and video-based tools in order to record movements and transfer them to avatars in Unity. Using a practice-oriented approach, we will learn about both opportunities and limitations of this easily accessible and promising approach in comparison to professional motion capture suits.

In order to prepare, please use IUNO Tutorial #01 to install the software Unity free of charge on your own laptop, open the software once at home and bring your computer to the workshop with you. Workshops & Seminars
With Anja Demidova (theater director, culture manager, instructor)

Artificial intelligence is quickly changing work in the cultural sector and contains challenges and risks as well as countless potentials. In this workshop, we will show you how artists and culture makers use AI tools for the often-invisible organizational work behind artistic practice. At the same time, we will critically reflect upon ethical questions and practical pitfalls: for example, funding applications created with AI often seem interchangeable and repetitive or contain clear errors, which costs jurors as well as applicants time and opportunities.

The participants will become acquainted with practical AI tools and will try out methods for using them effectively and responsibly. Together, we will create strategies for how AI can actually save time and enrich processes, without endangering originality and authenticity. We will look at how it can be supportive for funding applications, project suggestions and administrative tasks as well as ease communication, budgeting and accounting as well as research and the organization of information.

We will compare various AI tools and automated systems to find out which ones can actually be adapated to our individual needs. To do so, we will experiment with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI-based systems. The goal is to understand AI not as a threat but instead as a “super assistant” – a tool that can support creativity and efficiency.
