The closing of theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic has led many artists to considering working in public space while others have been working site-specifically for years and are seeing themselves faced with brand new challenges due to the current hygiene regulations. What does it mean to work artistically in public space and how do I find suitable spaces for my project? What does it mean to develop a location and transform it into an artistic object: for one’s own work, for the audience, for the urban environment? What guidelines and rules does one have to bear in mind and who does one turn to with organizational questions? And, which platforms and festivals are there that present this kind of performing art?
We do not deal with the topic of working in public space as an emergency solution, but instead contemplate the potentials of site-specific work and theater in public space. In doing so, we will look at different formats within this genre, answer organizational questions and research potential locations in Berlin and its surrounding area over the course of field studies.
