Stage & Production Management 101

What can stage and production management teach us about care and sustainable working practices? How can we develop better communication practices within the organizational and coordination process and establish human-centered production methods? This workshop focuses specifically on the practice of stage management – the interface that organizes and coordinates production processes, thereby linking all the artistic, technical and organizational aspects of a project. Stage managers ensure that information and decisions are clearly communicated, responsibilities are understood, changes are documented and potential problems are anticipated before they escalate into crises.

Participants will learn about practical tools from stage and production management – including production calendars, contact lists, rehearsal and meeting minutes, daily schedules, cue sheets, and costume and prop inventories – and apply them to the realities of independent producing in Berlin. Together, we will explore how we can use simple systems to create working conditions that take into account the energy levels and boundaries of those involved as well as relationships within the group whilst preventing burnout and maintaining a culture of collective care even during stressful moments.

The workshop is intended for independent performing artists who produce their own work or are increasingly taking on organizational tasks, as well as aspiring producers, or experienced producers who wish to deepen their skills in stage management. Participants who are currently working on a project or concept, or who simply have an idea are invited to bring it along and work on it during the workshop.
