Walking Tour: The Subculture in Berlin Mitte
Walking Tour: The Subculture in Berlin Mitte
XLterrestrials, an art and practice collective that explores possibilities beyond the dominant narratives, offers a special walking tour through the neighborhood surrounding Monbijoupark. This tour highlights the dramatic transformations the neighborhood has undergone since the 1990s, uncovering historical layers and cultural developments that are rarely remembered.
While many stories celebrate Berlin’s so-called “wild years” (following reunification), XLterrestrials focuses on what’s less told: hidden stories, overlooked voices, and the social, political, and economic forces that have shaped the area. Through site-specific narratives, the tour explores how displacement, expropriation, and big cultural shifts have taken place and what new perspectives emerge from them. The Walking Tour invites us to rethink our engagement with urban space.
Examples of sites we visit:
- Tacheles Kunsthaus (now the home of the Fotografiska Museum)
- The Am Tacheles Areal (the restoration of the passage connecting Friedrichstraße and Oranienburger Straße)
- The TelegrafenAmt (now a hotel)
- Universitäts-Frauenklinik in Berlin-Mitte (now the Gropius “Forum Museumsinsel")
- Former site of Circus Busch Theater (now James Simon Park)
- Kunsthaus KuLe + Die Heckmann-Höfe
