Spielraum – the 2024 Berlin Days of the Independent Performing Arts Community

5. September 2024 - 15. September 2024

Spielraum – the 2024 Berlin Days of the Independent Performing Arts Community

With Spielraum – Freie Szene Tage der darstellenden Künste Berlin 2024 (Spielraum – the 2024 Berlin Days of the Independent Performing Arts Community) the Berlin Performing Arts Program is coordinating a joint community-wide campaign for the first time, and annually thereafter. Spielraum places the focus on the locations of the independent performing arts community as places of encounter and movement, as places of exchange and of societal transformation. What community work, which neighborhood projects are intended for which audience members? How can connections to civil society be strengthened and how can new audience members be reached? How can we network ourselves beyond existing spaces, exchange perspectives and find new impulses for our community work?

Over ten days, the audience is invited to late night performances, tours of performance venues, public rehearsals as well as mourning rituals and crafts sessions. We will come together in a circus tent, an elementary school, on the grounds of a former factory, in a brewery as well as in numerous other locations. During the Climate Circle at tak, we will share challenging feelings about the climate crisis, converse with other Shakespeare fans about Hamlet in the Globe, shake our booties together at Ballhaus Prinzenallee or dance for democracy at the Brandenburg Gate – the schedule of programming for Spielraum really has something for everyone.

The Spielraum campaign is taking place in cooperation with the online portal Berlin Bühnen and DRAUSSENSTADT.

Network Event

On September 5 at 6:30 pm, we warmly invite you to our opening event at ufaFabrik. We will kick off the schedule of programming with drinks and music. We want to Szene zeigen!, or showcase the community, and will present selected ideas by Berlin-based artists. In addition, there will be introductory greetings and remarks by the Spielraum project team, by Babak Dehkordy (Berlin’s Senate Department for Culture and Community) as well as Sigrid Niemer (ufaFabrik Berlin e.V.).

For everyone who is interested in informing themselves in greater detail about the pilot project Community and Neighborhood Projects, discussing good practice examples with other practitioners, and finding new cooperation partners, we invite you to join us at 5 pm for a networking meeting.

Discourse
Discussion event on Community Work in the Independent Performing Arts Community

How can cultural institutions and culture workers strengthen connections to civic society and reach new audiences? One possible answer is through community building! But what is that, exactly? Which specific and possible practices are meant by this?

Over the course of the discussion event, representatives from the field will share their experiences and ideas. Together with additional experts, we will discuss which good practice examples the independent performing arts community can learn from, where they can dock and where they can forge alliances. And, we are asking ourselves: how can community work be inclusive and address diverse communities? Is community building primarily suitable for increasing audience members or is it more about creating places of encounter and movement, as places of exchange and of societal transformation?

With: Stefanie Aehnelt (tak Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg), Fee Josten (Initiative LUNA PARK e.V.), Prof. Johanna Kaiser (Verband für sozial-kulturelle Arbeit e.V. – Landesverband Berlin), Tim Schumann (Stadtbibliothek Pankow) / Moderation: Tessa Hart
